Digital 3d Movies: Awesome!

imageLet me just say that digital 3d was absolutely amazing!

If you're old enough to remember the 3d movies where you had to wear cheap glasses which had a red and a green lens, then you probably remember that they didn't work, at least not well.

Well, they fixed it.

Yesterday I had taken a day off to recover from the Foo Fighters concert, which was delayed BTW, and I we decided to go see "Journey to the Center of the Earth" in 3D.

I rarely ever go to movies anymore. In the past 7 years, I've gone to see about 6 movies in the theater. Ever since we had kids, it's just so much harder to arrange.

I have a feeling that I'll be going back to the movies much more often now.

The new digital 3d uses a polarized image instead of the color saturated images of the old movies. You can read a full explanation here. The short version is that it works insanely well. There were 3 times where something was coming "towards me" that I involuntarily dodged. It was that good. Even the credits were floated out of the screen.

Even for average scenes, the depth of the image was amazing.

I was so amazed at the 3D effects that later in the evening I found myself wondering if the movie itself was any good. I think it was, but I was that distracted by the effects.

If you haven't seen one of these movies, I highly recommend going to see one.

That's pretty cool. Like

That's pretty cool.

Like you, I don't go to movies much anymore myself. They're just too expensive, and it's much more comfortable to watch a movie in my own home. This is why I look at the new DVD releases every week. I'm much more excited about those than I am for whatever is coming to the cinema. If there's something good at the cinema, I'll just save my $8 and watch it for $1 when it hits DVD a few months later.

The last 3D movie I watched was that one Jaws movie many moons ago. I don't really remember the movie, but I do remember I wasn't very impressed with the 3D effects. I wasn't especially interested in seeing this version of Journey because I've never seen a remake of a classic sci-fi movie that was any good, and I wasn't expecting this one to be any different.

But if the 3D effects are as good as you say they are, maybe I'll have to just go see this one.

Well

The effects really are that good. On another note, it isn't actually a remake, it just has the same names. The main character is a scientist who, while trying to retrieve a seismic sensor, stumbles upon a volcanic tube that his brother was lost in a long time ago.
